Negritude was a literary movement and a theoretical framework for cultural criticism that both responded to and fueled the mid-20th century African and Caribbean uprisings for independence from colonial subjugation - particularly in French colonial territories. By rejecting European cultural and political dominance, writers like Aime Cesaire and Leopold Sedar Senghor (who later became the president of an independent Senegal) made clear the the role of the Black critic in clarifying the vision of a just world and connecting people of African descent across the artificial borders of the nation-state and colonizer-imposed language barriers.

According to Cesaire, Negritude is "[t]he simple recognition of the fact that one is black, the acceptance of this fact and of our destiny as blacks, of our history and culture.”
